REDFERN YOUTH CONNECT

Redfern Youth Connect (RYC) was established in 2014. We have been incorporated as a charity not-for-profit for the last 5 years. RYC was birthed from a vision for many vulnerable Aboriginal young people, disengagement from school is a crucial tipping point. Once disengaged, there is often a spiral towards a lifetime of poor outcomes. Despite the importance of this tipping point, there are no early intervention services in the Redfern area that encourage young people to stay engaged with education, stay out of trouble and plan for a brighter future. What we have developed is a consistent, Aboriginal-led, after-hours service based in community. This provides a safe space for young people to connect, access the right support and build the skills, confidence and capabilities to plan for the future. Redfern Youth Connect is an early intervention program for Aboriginal young people. It provides a consistent after hours service with support, capacity building skills and cultural activities for vulnerable 10-18 year olds. For disengaged young mob at higher risk of contact with the justice system, Redfern Youth Connect provides a safe space and programs to help the young mob make wise choices.

Our activities

Drop-in Centre

6 Days per week. Our Drop-in Centre is our main program and is youth-led with our young mob leadership teams. We open for after school drop-ins and on weekends. We will feed the young mob as well as support them with education needs through providing tutoring and drop off home safely. Our Drop-in Centre is run on a cultural kinship model.

Education Engagement

We have a Youth Education Officer that supports our kids at school as we have identified that our young mob go to school and go to class but will disengage with what is being taught as they do not understand. They are then labelled with a behavioural tag which then puts them on the pathway to behavioural schools which are statistically shown for our young mob to end up in Juvenile Justice system. This position was created by the parents and children of our community for our kids.

Tutoring

Our tutoring runs 3 days per week during school term in our drop in.

Young Mob Fitness

Young Mob Fitness is run during our school terms, whether we train in the gym or enter into a community competition it's all about having a balance and letting off steam.
